Top Pick and Mix Trends According to the Viral Packaging Videos on TikTok

Did you know that #pickandmix has 57.9 million views on TikTok? These calming sweet mixing videos created by shops and sellers on the app are one of the many peculiar food trends going viral on the social media platform.

Most of the videos are made by UK-based users and some of the user-generated requests ask for mixes that show specific colours, flavours or dietary requirements. Recently, one user even requested a ‘random’ Pick & Mix selection to be curtated in memory of Prince Phillip. Others are more specific about the types of sweets they want to see, while some existing customers will just ask for a TikTok video of their order being created.

One of the main reasons we think these types of videos are so popular is because they’re satisfying to watch and part of the ASMR category. According to Stephen Smith, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Winnipeg, ASMR is considered as a perceptual sensory phenomenon whereby the sounds cause a tingling sensation “associated with a feeling of relaxation.”

TikTok has around 689 million monthly active users worldwide, with 32.5% between the ages of 10-19 and 29.5% between the ages of 20-29. Since these videos are so popular, we wanted to take a deep dive into the trend to discover the top trends in the world of sweets! To do this, we looked at which sweets appeared in the top 26 #pickandmix videos on TikTok. We then calculated each sweet’s collective views by adding up the views for each video.

Top 10 Pick & Mix Sweets, According to TikTok

Our data shows that the delicious blue raspberry bonbons take the number one spot for the most viewed sweet on TikTok! These mouthwatering bonbons have just a hint of sourness, so you can really enjoy the raspberry flavour without being overwhelmed by sugar. Originally, bonbons were made of chocolate. They date back to the 17th century where they were created for the Parisian royal court. In fact, the name bonbon actually came from the reduplication of the French word ‘bon’ which means ‘good’.

According to Mashed, flavoured bonbons grew popular in the 1930s ‘candy boom.’ As WWII resulted in low sugar supplied at times, which had previously impeded the growth of the sweet-production industry, these types of sweets became a symbol of post-war prosperity.

The sweet choices that appear on TikTok are noticeably modern (you won’t find boiled sweets or chocolate covered raisins knocking about the top spots!) with bubblegum mushrooms and  fizzy bubblegum bottles also in the top three. Despite the huge variety of choices from online sellers, we’re left to wonder if users are picking sweets for aesthetically pleasing videos and novelty appearance over what they would normally choose based on taste.

Why do Blue Sweets Look the Tastiest?

Interestingly, we learned that the top three most viewed sweets on TikTok, blue raspberry Bonbons, bubblegum mushrooms and fizzy bubblegum bottles are all blue in colour.

Red is the second most popular sweet colour with 10,085,00 views in total. The colour red is often most associated with emotion and passion. It’s also the colour most used by fast-food chains, followed closely by yellow and orange. According to AWG, these are all colours that have been proven to make people feel hungry, so, when someone sees red combined with yellow and orange, in theory,  they should become passionately hungry.

But, why is it  that blue sweets look the tastiest when blue isn’t a colour that’s associated with food or hunger? Well, it could be down to the fact that blue and other bright colours massively appeal to children and bright colours provide an element of novelty. As adults, we then may see blue sweets as a fond memory of our childhood and naturally gravitate toward them.

Strawberry is the sweetest flavour

The top flavour on TikTok is the classic strawberry (to no surprise) with 9,072,100 views! Strawberry is the most common flavour used in sweets and with good reason. Strawberry is a delightfully sweet and refreshing flavour - and its popularity makes strawberry sweets the perfect gift for a loved one.

Bubblegum and raspberry take second and third spot on the flavour rankings, each with over five million views.

Did you know, watermelon sweets are said to taste nothing like watermelon? This is because, over the last few decades, scientists have identified dozens of flavour and aroma molecules that contribute to watermelon’s unique taste. But, they are impossible to artificially replicate. The chemistry of watermelon flavour is complex and scientists are still searching for individual molecules that mimic watermelon’s characteristic taste.

To Fizz or not to Fizz?

We also discovered that jelly sweets are more popular than fizzy sweets, with fizzy sweets gaining 27,529,500 views on TikTok and jelly sweets receiving 32,118,400 views. Although, this is likely due to the bigger variety available rather than how many jelly sweets actually made up the mixes.

Are the Classics Getting Less Popular?

Amongst the bottom 10 are some of the most well-known sweets in the world. jelly beans, gummy bears and cola bottles are just some of the least popular sweets shown on TikTok (shocking we know!) But, despite being on the lower end of the list, these sweets are still getting featured, with jelly beans getting 121,400 views and both gummy bears and cola bottles receiving 147,200 views each, showing that some of our favourite classics will never die.
